The Given Day by Dennis Lehane

4.0

This was a great book. Took a while to read, but well worth it. The scope and the length of the book, were both a bit overpowering, and at times I didn't see an end in sight, but overall I was quite pleased with the depth of the characters and I enjoyed the fictionalized view of historic reality. The text had a different tone than Lehane's other books, but like his detective prose, the conversations were the best part. In other words, the sections where characters spoke dialog was natural and felt real, even if you have to presume what "real" dialog would have been like in 1918.

I also enjoyed the baseball portions as interludes in the drama. Very well placed and appropriate.
