Never Been Witched by Molly Harper

Flaws of characters a main focus: Yes

Honestly, the pacing of this book felt kind of off. Perhaps it was the sequence in which key events happened? Maybe it was certain events being incredibly anticlimactic? At one point even the characters seemed to forget what was at stake in favor of focusing on their tumultuous love lives. There were so many red herrings that the big reveal didn’t feel as spectacular as I had hoped it would. Additionally, I would like to point out for anyone checking warnings that there are familial and personal relationships portrayed in this story which are SUPER toxic and I actually think it was kind of frustrating how they were handled
except everyone telling Alice’s grandparents to fuck off, that was good
. The “language” jokes also got very old.
I mean seriously, if my children could see dead people, I wouldn’t really care what language they use, I would just be focusing on helping them cope - on top of their parental divorce issues and literally seeing a guy DIE last book!
There were aspects of this book that I enjoyed such as the mystery of the ring, Plover, and a new ghost, Charlie (who I adored). But they felt like islands in a sea of emotional baggage and bad decisions
as usual the male love interests really aren’t the bee’s knees? I am with Plover on this one.
. Additional rant with serious spoilers:
seriously Clark’s death made me so angry!!!!!!!!!!!!!! It felt so anticlimactic and they just seemed to forget about him after? Also the main baddie’s motivations felt so forced. That plus the disorganized feel of the sequences of the book makes me wonder if the author was rushed to finish this?
