What You Need From The Night by Laurent Petitmangin

4.0

An excellent, thought provoking book. It's simply written but powerful and concise. We're drawn in to the family and it's problems in a very matter of fact way where the protagonist's 'live and let live' approach is faced with the reality of a son who has a gentle spirit (at least with his father) but big opinions that cause waves of harm and pain.

It feels like a realistic portrayal of how smaller communities are often complicit in not addressing problematic behaviour of one of their own. As if they've understood the pain and life journey of those they hold close and forgive their sins against nameless and faceless others... or perhaps that there's more sympathety or admiration than they'd dare admit.
