Secondhand Skin by Hailey Turner

4.5

"Riordan encompassed everything he found safe in a person— strong- willed, big- hearted, and willing to protect those he cared about— and Wade didn’t want to let him go."

Secondhand Skin is the story of Wade Espinoza, core member of the NYC god pack, dragon and a fiend for food. When the Boston pack sends out a mystery call for help, Wade arrives only to find all the supernatural and preternatural communities being encroached upon by a sector of fae. Among those who need help is the selkies, led by Riordan, who Wade wants from the moment he lays eyes on him. Working together to save the city and their people, Wade and Riordan fall in love while forging alliances, fighting forced bargains with fae, threatening vampires and eating tons and tons of food.

"Desire was a foreign sensation, but Wade rather thought this was what it should always feel like— an aching kind of need that buried itself deep in every inch of his body."

Wade has been one of my favorite characters in this universe since I read the Soulbound series a few years ago. I was so happy when I found out that we were finally getting a story about him and I was not disappointed in the slightest! Wade is snarky, unapologetic and utterly insatiable when it comes to food. So of course he falls for someone who's in the restaurant business. With his past, Wade has never felt safe or comfortable enough to really feel desire or even affection for someone in a non-familial way. But to see how far he's come since then where he can not only sort through those feelings but also act on them and find love was so beautiful to see.

"He had a really nice smile. Wade wanted to keep him. Hoarding tendencies were the worst sometimes."

Riordan is an amazing introduction to this universe and to Wade's life. He's patient and steady, in complete contrast to Wade's impulsive nature. But just like Wade, he's highly protective of those he cares for and Wade joins that list almost from the beginning. And he's not only willing to support Wade's snack habits, but Wade is actually willing to share food with him which shows just how serious he is about him!! I loved all those soft moments between them and how easily they fell for each other even with everything that was happening around them.

"Riordan’s smile was something Wade knew he’d always want to see for years to come— sweet and warm and full of what he realized just then was love."

This book was everything I wanted for Wade and I loved reading his journey to his HEA. Getting a peek into Jono and Patrick and their pack is always great and I adored the way they still love and support each other, even when Wade is getting on their nerves. If you haven't read the Soulbound series yet, I'd definitely recommend it if you like mythology and/or urban fantasy. But you can still read this book as a standalone, though you'd enjoy it more as part of the wider universe!
