I read this book because I saw the tv show was coming out. I was disappointed. There are a lot of interesting threads and premises here, but then nothing really seems to happen with them. Shockingly little plot happens in the book, and by the end I was very bored. I kept waiting for things to pick up, and stuff happens at the end, but the climactic event happens about 50% further into the book than I was expecting.
The writing itself was not bad, and I think you could do interesting things with the characters and the world, but I don't feel I can recommend the book. Honorable mention however - the main female character was impressively unsexualized, even though there were multiple opportunities for the author to say something cringey about her.
