One Dark Window by Rachel Gillig

4.25

This story was fascinating. I loved the magic system. All magic came with a cost, an interesting take I enjoyed. I can't think of a book that can compare to that (if anyone can, please let me know). The fact that it is still very secretive and there is more to uncover when it comes to the magic makes me want the second book.

I really liked the fact that I did not know who to trust and believe in this story. Everyone had secrets! Even with the influence of magic that could prove their loyalty to a certain side, I am not sure who to wrong or right!

I think the cliffhanger was typical.
The nightmare nor Elspeth says that she is dead. They just say she kind of fades away. It isn't like degeneration where the infected die because the magic eats away at them and they never come back. It left the thought that she will be coming back.

Speaking of the infected, the hypocrisy was crazy! The king and his psycho son kill so many, but the king still keeps some because they are useful. Imagine if they gave the infected a chance to live. Regardless of the degeneration, their magic is all-powerful! They can be useful. Also, the king would never have to worry about being overthrown or threatened because of the magic they have because they die in the end!
Emory can see into the minds of people. I don't think he has a choice or any will to control that power.
But the King rather have him locked in his room to rot away.

Overall, I thought this book was a good build-up to what's to come. I am looking forward to the second book.
