The White Tiger by Aravind Adiga

5.0

My second Asian read for the year and it was worth it.

"The dreams of the rich, and the dreams of the poor- they never overlap, do they?"

The White Tiger is an animal that comes along once every other generation. This book tells the story of a white tiger who escaped the system of the rooster coup in India.

Aravind Adiga is an exceptional writer. He's way with words translocates you into India itself.

The story follows a young boy without name but was given Balram in subsequent years. Balram understood that his country and his family already predetermined his future and destiny.

He was born into the darkness of India- the poor lower class of India- into the family of sweet makers. Balram watched his family wither away while the landlords, men who lived in the light of India grew fat bellies and made the lower India wash their feet.

Balram Halwai understood the game of the rooster coup. Each rooster inside the coup knows it would be his turn one day to live the coup, but not in terms of freedom but to die. But even when the cage is open he doesn't have it in him to fly away and seize his freedom.

But Balram knew the reason why no one attempted to leave the lower class India and journey into the light. He knew why his father died of tuberculosis and nothing happened. But he wasn't going to end up like his father or brother.

Balram, servant, philosopher, entrepreneur, murder... Found a way out of the famous Indian rooster coup that kept the poor poorer and the rich richer.
