What Is Visible by Kimberly Elkins
5.0
What is Visible was a fantastic read!
This book has launched me into a historical fiction worm hole- one I don’t know if I want to crawl out of.
Laura Bridgman was “the one” before Helen Keller. She was the first deaf/blind girl to receive a formal education. It is her story that paved the way for Helen Kelley’s success.
Elkins, in my humble opinion, did this trailblazer proud. While there were several pieces to Bridgams puzzle Elkins had to put together, there was little left to the imagination.
Her research showed as I furiously looked up each event and incident. The descriptions were spot on. She vividly describes the life Laura lived from the gowns the wore, the tasteless food, stark emotion, and the grandeur of her surroundings- down the to curls of the headmasters beard.
I don’t want to get too into the storyline, it’s a messy beautiful loving creature on its own. I’d hate to ruin any part of it. But what I will say is that she is a vital piece of history.
