War Dances by Sherman Alexie

After reading The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian, some of his poetry, and his blog postings, I decided I have to read everything by this man. Reading this book has kept me dedicated to this goal. There are some entries in this book where the distinction between poetry and narrative is blurred and I loved trying to figure out the meaning.

Despite the sad nature of the majority of the poems and stories, in the end I found the book to be life affirming. The last poem, "Food Chain" is beautiful sentiment to how we are connected. His ability to express bits of his private life in his stories makes me want to find similar themes in my own life experience.

Side Note: I can use some of the poems with my 7th graders, but the short stories are too mature.
