Shadow and Bone by Leigh Bardugo

4.0

I had no expectations from this book. The only reason I was reading this book was because I wanted to know the backstories of Nikolai and Zoya before reading King of Scars. But this book exceeded my expectations. I really liked reading it. I never got bored (maybe because I was already in love with the grishaverse?). Whatever the reason may be, it was worth my time.

"What is infinite? The universe and the greed of men.”

All those who don't know about what happens in this book, here's a quick summary. In this book we have Alina Starkov, a normal girl whose life changes when she tries to protect her best friend Mal. It is discovered that she is the Sun Summoner, the only one whom everyone believes to be the destroyed of the Fold, a place ruled by darkness, created by the Black Heretic. Alina is then taken by the Darkling (the commander of the army composed of the Grisha and the descendant of the Black Heretic) to the Little Palce where she can train and become stronger to destroy the Fold. We see how Alina learns to trust everything she's told about and later on learn that anyone can betray anyone (yes I quoted a line from Red Queen).

“Just you and me."
"Really?"
"It's always just you and me, Alina.”

I don't like Alina. She was quite likeable in the beginning however instead of her character developing, it went down the hill. As soon as she reached the Little Palace, she forgot that before her power was discovered, she had another life too. She wanted to protect everyone, but as soon as she realized that she was weak she tried to become a rebel and raise Baghra's temper, while dream about the Darkling who was way older than her. She said that she loved Mal however as soon as the Darkling entered her life she forgot about Mal. And as soon as she knew about the Darkling's true intentions, she once again had feelings for Mal.

“I'm sorry it took me so long to see you, Alina. But I see you now.”

I have a question for all the Malina and Darklina shippers out there. You all ship Alina and Mal or Alina and Darkling. Why don't you all ship Mal or Darkling with someone else? Like Alina isn't worthy of any of these two. I can't say about Darkling though. I don't like him at all. Mal is much better than Darkling. But my opinions can change so please all the Mal haters and Darkling lovers don't kill me before I finish this series. I really want to read King Of Scars. Also I am waiting not so patiently for my Danya ship to come together.

Overall I would rate this book 3.5 stars.
