A classic from my childhood (we won't mention that my copy is stolen from my primary school): Sachar's writing is brilliantly entertaining, the plotline allows for both tender and dramatic moments, and even though these kids are supposed to be 'troublemakers', you can't help but root for them like an affectionate band of misfits. A good dose of funny escapism, with a heartwarming ending.
Moderate: Child abuse
