Companions of the Night by Vivian Vande Velde

A reasonably real-world encounter with a vampire. Illustrates the seediness of that life: need to hide, maintain different identities, ready to leave town at drop of a hat, need to dispose of bodies unobtrusively, etc. Kerry is excellent as heroine, very much possession of herself, alert to the very real dangers surrounding her situations, taking in information rationally, ever keeping what is truly important before her -- the safety of her father and younger brother.

Very quick and easy read. Highly recommended for the anti-Bella Swan crowd.
