Reviving Thebes: Ismene's Beginning by S Eugene Adam

3.0

This is a very wonderful thriller that explores the theme of nature vs. nurture. It revolves around a criminal lawyer in Chicago who is known as “The Doc” which leads a double life as a serial killer. The narrative of the book delves into the motivation and factors that will contribute to his dark desires.

The protagonist of the book Alex Katsaros is an archaeologist who has the deep connection to his Greek heritage that embarks on a journey to uncover the secrets of Thebes. As Alex sees the ruins of this ancient city, he not only finds some mysteries but also the complexities of his identity and challenges of the present day.

There are well developed characters that are all very relatable to us and each of them has their struggles which they overcome while navigating the cultural and political landscapes. The prose has vivid descriptions of what brings the history and mythology of Greece to life and immerses the readers in it completely.

One of the main strengths of the novel is that it explores the contemporary society and its relevance with culture and then highlights the myths and heritage that shapes our understanding of the world.

Alex’s discoveries and experiences continue to influence our cultural identities and draw the readers into their own personal journeys throughout.

Overall, a thrilling read.
