It’s rare that I have such a conflicted reaction to a book! The writing is so, so good, the central love story is tender, and Patroclus and Briseis are both pure and lovely characters. But on the other hand, it is about a 10-year war, so I spent the last third of the book mad about “honor,” stubborn pride, and the futility of battle… and basically screaming “why are men?” every few minutes. So, on balance, it gets 4 stars.
And shout out to Pyrrhus, who is only around for the last chapter or two but who I hated more than anyone else in the book. Big Joffrey Baratheon vibes.
