One Book in the Grave
by Kate Carlisle
One of my favourite "cozy mystery" series, and this one was just as enjoyable as the past books.
Brooklyn is trying desperately to just get back to normal life with her book-binding buisness and her hot English security expert boyfriend, Derek, who's now living at her place.
She's thrilled when she's offered the opportunity to restore a rare copy of Beauty and the Beast. But when she sees the book, she realizes that it used to belong to a friend of hers, a friend who's been dead for several years, and the book was stolen property. And Brookly, being Brooklyn, has to look into how the book came to be back in circulation after all this time, because Brooklyn's always had doubts about the manner in which her friend died.
When Brooklyn starts her investigation by visiting the bookdealer who sold the book she finds the man murdered in his shop, and just like that, she's once again embroiled in murder to her great chagrin!
These books are not Agatha Cristie with respect to the mystery aspect, it's the characters and the interplay between them, as well as the book history and book-binding information worked into the story that makes them fun to read.
Brooklyn's nutty commune-living family are hilarious and her friends in San Francisco where she lives are just as eccentric and entertaining. Not to mention Brooklyn's nemesis - Minka LeBoeuf - who always arrives on the scene just in time to poke a thorn into Brooklyn's side in the funniest of ways.
These are easy and fast reads, but I really enjoy them. If you're interested in a cozy mystery series with quirky fun characters I recommend this one.
