This is "Party of Five" set in rural northern Ontario. After their parents are killed, 19-year-old Luke keeps the family together by giving up his spot in college and, alongside 18-year old-Matt, takes care of their younger sisters, Kate and Bo. Narrated by Kate, now a professor in Toronto, we hear not only her story, but the story of the rural farmland of her childhood as well.
At times I loved this book—some of the descriptions of the landscape and rural life were really lovely—and at times it was disappointing and kind of corny. There are all together too many "little did I know..." and "later we would realize..." kind of language, which I just felt was a clumsy and unnecessary way of trying to foreshadow. Perhaps most disappointing was Kate's immature take on education and knowledge and her way of seeing how life turned out for her siblings. The big revelation for Kate seemed like an obvious option for at least the last half of the book for me, so I found it frustrating waiting for her to come around.
