Just Kids by Patti Smith
5.0
I've always known Patti Smith as the musician so when I mentioned to a friend that I had just started her memoir, I wasn't surprised to hear the term poet in her description of Smith. What I didn't realize was that she was referring to Smith the artist beyond the musician.
Smith's story is a beautifully written tale of self discovery and struggle in a time when the world was changing. It's not only the story of Smith and Robert as they helped eachother through the early part of their careers but also the story of a different time, a time when 50 cents was real money and New York was a different beast.
I've never been a huge fan of Smith's music but "Just Kids" is a beautifully written story of struggle and success and one with universal themes that everyone can appreciate.
