Marriage for One by Ella Maise
3.0

2.5 ⭐️ but rated up because GR doesn’t give half stars. Okay, I’m a silly little sucker for arranged marriage or marriage for convenience trope (hey, I like many tropes, I’m not hard to please here). Best part of the book? The authors play on a Titanic favorite, Rose and Jack. It started off strong and clever. It fell flat around 60% and by the spice, it was cringe, too little too late, and literally scrolling through to just finish. I never do that if it’s done right.

There is NO reason, and I repeat, NO reason for this book to be over 500 pages long. Here is the book: Rose, our FMC, is “NYC poor” and angsty, wanting to open up a coffee shop on Madison Ave in NYC because poor people can afford to do that. Some family relative (uncle, I think?) died and in his will he gave a property to Rose’s husband because even in death let’s add some patriarchy. Jack, our MMC, is a hot shot lawyer who fell in love with Rose at first sight so went through grand elaborate lengths to marry her and then convince her to fall in love with him.

Where did this go wrong? Well, why the hell was this 500 pages? The two MCs don’t even finally hook up until like 70% in. I almost DNF around 80% but had to find out the “twist” and secret Jack kept. It was the most underwhelming reveal and she forgives him after 8 days. Rose, way to stick to pretend guns because you are a poorly crafted FMC
