Damn i think I have to let my thoughts settle, and I may come back with a more fully formed review at some point. But HOLY SHIT - this book was even more of a whirlwind - so much happened and I feel like our team is really starting to feel the trauma of their circumstances in a lasting way that’s creating certain decisions being made that maybe they wouldn’t have made before.
Seeing them consistently rally together and help each other is so heartwarming amidst the horrible odds.
It really helps me to remember that nothing’s impossible if we do it together.
Also…long live Juicebox! I love her. 🥹
Katia leaving to help reform the Daughters is so emotional but I think it makes sense and I kinda saw it coming. It’ll be interesting to see how the dynamics continue to shift as they continue onwards.
DAMN - the Chris and Maggie thing I did NOT see coming and that totally blew my mind. I’m so glad they found a way to save Chris😭
Also I wanted to fucking cut a bitch when I heard what they did to Zev’s family - AGHHH - that was AWFUL. Poor Zev😔 I felt almost as relieved as Donut to realize the real her was still in there🥺❤️🩹 That other fish lady can go fuck herself. Seeing that total level of hatred she displayed for humanity really reminded me of how the religious zealots here in the US feel about me and my queer community.
It was jarring and I was so fucking pumped that Carl got away with some vigilante justice there.
Although the epilogue has me dying to understand what’s going on! Wtf is Odette doing?! I can’t believe Bea is still alive!😱 AND Ferdinand! 🤯
Other things I loved were:
The AI giving Carl stocks in and photos of the mother’s of the plaintiffs in the failed lawsuit🙂↕️🤣 The two drunk guys whose names are not coming to me actually getting their shit together🥹
Donut, Katia, and Carl finding a way to secretly communicate.
How Carl got all the NPC kids into the safe room to protect them!
How Carl is always trying to save everyone even though it’s literally impossible.
Donut getting super mad about stuff, both trivial and massively enraging.
Donut loving Mongo so much🥹
Samantha just…existing😂
I WOULD DIE FOR MORDECAI OKAY😤😭
Every time Donut says ‘Mongo is appalled’ 😂
Anytime Carl says GODDAMNIT!😂

Easily some of the best adventure books I’ve ever read.
Really gets into the grit of oppression and revolution and the evils of capitalism and colonialism without actually bringing up too much of it. It just shows you the consequences of it all.
As ever, huge bravo to Matt Dinniman!
Goddamn, these brooks just keep getting better and better - Matt has me so obsessed with all these characters and I genuinely think it will destroy me emotionally if they don’t win their revolution and create some justice. 😭
Starting book 5 now…
