Shooting Out the Lights: A Memoir by Kim Fairley

4.0

It's a page-turner memoir. Kim Fairley tells the story of her love and life with Vernon, a man thirty-two years her senior, and how she struggled with his tragic past. In the first chapter of the memoir, we find out that Vernon loses his son to gun violence. Years later, and already married to Kim, a kid arrives in their lives that Vernon is eager to help. But Kim, pregnant with their first child, feels this as an imposition and really wonders what lies behind Vernon's intentions.

The prose is crisp and articulate but at the same time very touching. The reader can't help but empathize with everyone involved in the conflict because their motivations are legitimate and driven by love. Well written and executed.
