Remarkably Bright Creatures by Shelby Van Pelt
Did not finish book.
2.0
I did not finish this book. I did not like this book. I know I’m in the minority because this book has been recommended to me by so many people and has achieved such critical acclaim, but I felt like the writing was amateur. The author insisted upon explaining jokes and characters’ realizations to us rather than trusting that we were smart enough to understand what was happening. She also added superfluous adjectives into every sentence and included an inane amount of unnecessary exposition both in the form of dialogue and description. I finally gave up at 60% through during an extremely tedious passage. Rather than just saying “the guests made small talk,“ she insisted on walking us through every excruciating detail of the small talk. That was the final straw for me. I give this book two stars for the octopus, who was a fun character.
