The Interrogation of Ashala Wolf by Ambelin Kwaymullina

5.0

This one really sucked me in. Imagine a world where people with abilities are considered Illegals who must be detained for the safety of Citizens. That wasn't too hard considering we already live in a world where ICE disappears beloved community. In Ashala's post-apocalypse society, the Balance is maintained to prevent humanity for destroying the world again. Some people would have you believe that Illegals upset the balance by existing but Ashala and her Tribe reject that narrative and live free.

That's just the backstory. The book takes you through a twisty memory trip as it reveals hidden truths. I loved how the story unfolded and will probably be thinking about this one for awhile. The author drew upon her background as part of the Palyku people, aboriginals whose Country is inland Australia. You'll probably like this if you're into X-men or other stories of youth with powers fighting oppressive governments.
