Justin and Emma have struck up a unique deal. They will date each other enough times to break their curse and find their sole mates. Problem is they develop stronger feelings for each other than either ever expected. They're both in tough spots to create a new relationship.
Justin is about to take guardianship of his siblings and be tied down for awhile. Emma is a travelling nurse. She could get a job in one place, but that would mean she has to quit running.
Emma and Justin both have challenging lives for other reasons as well. Emma's mom doesn't seem to care about Emma at all unless Emma has something to offer her. Emma has always been trying to fill the void and find a way to get her mom to just stay and want to be her mom. Justin is dealing with the grief of losing his father and helping his mom who crumbled under the pressure.
Emma is definitely the more problematic one in this book and I could see why some people might not like her. She is very much a people-pleaser, but mainly to strangers. She doesn't let anyone close enough to become attached to. She switches jobs every 6 weeks and just picks up and moves. It's very clear that she has some underlying mental health issues that need to be resolved. But it's easier to just keep moving.
