The Big Four
by Agatha Christie
I've been reading Christie for less than a year now, picking up books haphazardly, at yard sales, and borrowing them from my mother. So my exposure to the "heavy hitter stories" in the Hercule Poirot universe is limited. Having given that caveat, this is my favorite of the ones I've read so far, and much more what I was expecting when I set out to expose my mind to the famous Belgian finally.
The author's nod to the famous Sherlock Holmes books toward the end of this book was well taken, as I had already noted to myself similarities between Holmes/Watson and Poirot/Hastings. Noted, but not necessarily liked, as I refused to believe that Hastings was as bumbling as Poirot sometimes painted him. Nor did I really appreciate how Poirot used Hastings at every turn.
Perhaps this is part of why most others have given this book much lower scores than I have.
The overwhelmingly low rating for this work leaves me with hope that when I finally do get to the more famous works, I will be pleased with them.
