Y'know part of it is my fault. I found this book through TV Tropes and thought it's premise was interesting, and it's title and cover intrigued me all the more. But while I knew the setting was in an active apocalypse and the imagery of "Black Tide" had my mind going, at the end of the day it was just
another alien invasion story.
And yeah, I guess I'm mostly upset at what the book could've been with that title and premise alone, but I also couldn't stand our main characters.

Beth is annoying, but I did honestly enjoy how terrible she was and was half enjoying her terrible decisions/attitude and half cheering on her heroic actions in spite of that. But Mike. Oh my God, every Mike chapter was an absolute chore. The man really could not stop comparing everything to his film background, being self-loathing, or talking about his wife. We get it man,
you miss your dead wife
, tell me something new like how you're going to try to survive this
active alien invasion

If you enjoy insufferable characters that are halfway self aware that they'll only make bad decisions, I guess this book is for you. The dog in it was cool.
