I love the atmosphere of warmth and community in this book. The villagers of Maran weather so much together - famine, war and loss - and that only makes the moments of love they find in one another more special. I best like the parts focalised through Anatolia; the others are slightly less interesting to me. But they come together to form a story that is able to be hopeful and life-affirming without ever coming across as trite. And the writing style is lovely. I don't know what the original is like, as I can't read Russian, but I'm sure the translator has done a fantastic job. This was a lucky find in the library!
