Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban by J.K. Rowling

So I started reading the books because of the video Sideways made about the scoring of the movie adaptations.

My thoughts on the books when I was younger were nitpicky, cinema sins style, bad faith criticisms and giving the books a chance and suspending my disbelief improved the experience a lot.

As much as I despise the author, she really does the set up - reminder - payoff scheme well. This book didn't have all the redundant information about the setting and characters like the second book, the exposition is fun, Hogsmeade feels like a really fun place, and the students of Hogwarts feel more friendly, the world-building is stronger and introduces characters who are about to be really important in the upcoming books.

I do think that it has some parts that drag on a little but the book is greater than the sum of its parts.

...Cho Chang is a very odd choice to name your East Asian character btw. And the AIDs allegory is just terrible. I have no idea why a person would write that and it makes me dislike her even more. She also writes fat people in a really odd way and it makes me a bit uncomfortable. Like which fat person hurt you?

I can understand why someone wouldn't want to have the terf to attached to their beloved well-written childhood novel. Despite my developing attachment to the characters and despite enjoying this book a lot, I am never giving another penny to this franchise.

So yea I've been pirating the audiobooks and if anyone wants to read the books, please pirate them.

For legal reasons, the piracy comment is a joke.

Wink Wink Nudge Nudge.
