The Stronghold by Dino Buzzati

5.0

A powerful tale about a man seeking glory in a world that's ultimately indifferent to him. A work I'd classify among the existentialist movement (despite not intending to be), it very neatly sits alongside Camus as the best explorations of man's search for meaning in an absurd world. In many ways I imagine most are like Giovanni Drogo: woefully fulfilling duties only for the purpose of achieving something greater, which will likely never come. And also like most ultimately Drogo is just another forgotten name in an all encompassing story; "... the entire world, then, was living without any need of Giovanni Drogo."

Brilliant work, and one I'd not hesitate to call a masterpiece
