I just finished reading this at, like, 12AM, so this review is coming to you fresh as hell.
I’ve read Wilder Girls by Rory Power, and when I saw this book coming out, and with that synopsis, I had to read it.
Nan, our main character, kills three girls, until suddenly one day one of them returns. Nan tries to figure out what happened while hiding herself and the truth from pretty much anybody. It’s an intense ride overall, and a super interesting plot in itself.
Nan is an interesting main character. Reading from her perspective gives you a lot of questions and answers pretty much all at once. It’s obvious from the very beginning that Nan has some issues, and it becomes even more obviousthat Nan was never friends with these girls like she claimed. It was also quite obvious that Luce did remember everything, from the very beginning. Also, I’m curious how Nan got their earrings if they went swimming and got caught my a freaking whirlpool and died. I leave my earrings in when I swim, am I the weird one??
I did enjoy the plot betweenNan’s dad and Luce’s mom, you know, that whole thing. I think that the author kind of got away with it in a lazy way, making it so Nans dad was just never around much. I feel like we could have learned so much more about her father than him being kind of aloof? The book could have done so much more with 100 more pages.
I also uh, hate all of the girls? Nan, Edie, Jane, Luce? They all suck balls. As soon as you realize as the reader that they arebullying Nan, then it nearly makes you want to side with her, and makes you even more sympathetic when you read from her perspective. I mean, Nan throughout the book does become quite annoying. The repetition of her circling around “I killed them, I killed them” did feel a bit heavy at times. Yes Nan, every chapter, we know you killed them.
Also, the ending was….hrm. It was interesting to learn thatLuce even wanted to kill Nan, and was bullying her by wanting to leave her in a freaking canyon. There was about 100 ways they could have went with dealing with Nans “stalking”. The whole “let’s befriend her and hang a few times, then ditch her cause I actually hate her” is crazy. Bruh, yall are kids. Talk to your parents, or literally tell her to leave you guys alone? Don’t be so damn inviting if you want her to go away 😭 if it was that serious, go to the police bro. God, I want to round house kick all of these people.
If you are a young adult wanting to dip your toes into thrillers/light horror-ish, then I say check this one out! It’s a short and easy read :)
