I found a couple of good insights in this book. But they were buried beneath a lot of repetition and what came across to me as “I need to make this book 200 pages so I am going to put in as many filler words as possible” it was full of authors personal opinion with little to no science aside from the 12 step program to back any of her statements up - she also quotes a lot from other authors who likely wrote better books than she did.

I appreciate the detachment insight - and separating yourself from other people’s responsibilities and problems. But she doesn’t go into any detail on exactly how to do that. I understand being aware is the first step. But the doing is the challenging part and she doesn’t offer much insight on that.

As a former alcoholic that successfully quit WITHOUT a 12 step program her constant prattling about the program and inclination that you can only quit with a program was a bit invalidating…

I believe if you have no idea about codependency or mental health in general this is a great starter book for you. If you have already read some other titles such as “why does he do that” or a book about any kind of mental health at all, the information in here could seem mundane and repetitive.
