Just for the Summer
by Abby Jimenez
Justin didn’t think posting an AITA thread on Reddit would lead to his life changing forever but that’s exactly what happened. Justin has noticed that every girl he dates goes on to find her forever right after him. When Emma sees his post she decides to reach out as she seemingly has the same curse. They hatch a plan to date just for the summer to see if their curses can cancel each other out. But as with so many things in life what starts out as an easy solution quickly turns complicated.
I listened to this audio on Libby and I was hooked from the start. I figured this would be a cute fling to forever summer read and while I would enthusiastically recommend it for anyone looking for that, it’s also a deep dive into how our upbringing can impact our ability to form healthy and meaningful relationships and what it takes to break the cycle and take a chance on what your life could be when you do.
Emma’s fear of commitment stemming from her mom was more impactful as we didn’t just hear about it but we watched it unfold and exactly how that continuous cycle distorted Emma’s development and world view. This also made her friendship with her BFF Maddie, who I absolutely adored, so important.
I never thought I would fall for a mmc named Justin of all things but here we are. Justin is the perfect golden retriever book boyfriend and exactly the safe landing place that Emma needed. And the counter to that is her adventurous lifestyle and humor helped bring Justin out of a dark time and cope with the new unexpected responsibilities he was facing. Their chemistry was 10/10. You could see the heartbreak coming from a mile away but that HEA was so satisfying because of it.
This was one of those audiobooks that as I listened I could see the scenes playing out before my eyes and I struggled to put this one down. I’m so excited to dive into Abby’s back catalog. If you haven’t picked up a book by her yet I cannot recommend this one highly enough.
