I couldn't decide between 3.5 or 4, but as you can ultimately see, I decided that I liked it more than I didn't. I'm not really a fan of books that use abuse as a major plot device, though it works better with this story than most. The books toggles between the stories of three women with three distinct timelines and yet connected in multiple ways. Women of learning and knowledge have a long history of being suspected of witchcraft. A woman living alone? Living without a man? It's unnatural. She must have taken the Devil as her lover....
I enjoyed the tale of uncanny women with more power than most. I also enjoyed with darker edge to the cottage life and womanhood. I just wish, honestly, there was less rape, abuse, and violence. But I wish that were the case in reality as well.
