“You can take your gold, but afterwards, things are, things are flat. There is less beauty in a rainbow, less meaning in a sermon, less joy in a kiss…Less.”
When I picked it up, the only thing I knew about this book was that I had just missed the live performance in San Francisco. So, as I read, I kept thinking “fable,” “folklore,” “moral,” and “holy-Grimm!” Of course, when I was done with the book and looking online at the press, I realized that these thoughts were not surprises – but I think I got more out of it by being surprised.
Gems, like the one that starts this review, are peppered throughout the story. And, I admit, when I reached the last page, I had to go back and reread the first page. Maybe this comes from reading it when I was half-asleep? Being kept awake by this amazing Gaiman creation? I find with most of his books that more “ah-ha” moments can come with each re-read – at least they do with me.
The illustrations were beautiful. I mean, just look at the cover: haunting and dark!
I am very sad I missed the live interpretation. But I have a request in for the library’s audio version. Maybe I can experience a small piece of the live performance??
