When my late Mother was a young woman she read this book and much later said what a profound effect it had on her and recommended that I read it. Many years later, I thought it was time I read it.
It is an interesting book. I have never known poverty and the descriptions in Paris and London in the 1930s sound rough. His descriptions about food preparation in Paris make me wonder what it is like today.
London sounded rough too, although I expect in some respect things must have changed, not necessarily for the better. I would expect more violence and more people dehabilitated by drugs today.
