chelford 's review for:
Our Wives Under The Sea
by Julia Armfield
I have very, very many questions, but I imagine this would be an entirely different book if it answered any of them. I once had a creative writing professor that hammered home the idea that intentionally vague writing like this is lazy, not literary, but that guy also said no one wants to read "women's stories," so this would be a double (triple?) middle finger to him. Any and all world building that took place seemed in service of building a sense of dread that edged on horror. The writing itself was gorgeous (I bookmarked so many lines). Same for the narration.
