Vital Blindside by Hannah Cowan

5.0

reread note: AdamScarlett forever honestly. my favorite Swift Hat Trick couple still slayed reading it for the second time!

Combining the single dad, reverse grumpy x sunshine, and hockey romance tropes is a recipe for my favorite book ever, and Vital Blindside DELIVERED! Adam is the sunniest man I have ever read and I fell in love early on. Combining that with Scarlett who was grumpy but looking for that sunshine to balance her out (sometimes reverse grumpy x sunshine makes the FMC a little too grumpy where she becomes borderline mean and unlikeable but not in this case!!) made for an epic romance.

I thought that the struggles Scarlett faced were very real, and I empathized with her regarding her guilt about her mother's disease. Getting to see Adam grow into this dad figure was also amazing, especially from his first appearance in Lucky Hit. I just loved them both separately but putting them together was just a gold mine.

The things that Adam was saying to Scarlett had me kicking and screaming like a little girl with a crush. If a man ever says that stuff to me it's over, he had me swooning so hard. I appreciated the way that they came to a crossroads but talked it out and did not let each other give up on what they had. IT easily could have been a third-act breakup where I felt that it was avoidable but it was dealt with in a mature way which is not always the case as we know lol.

I also appreciated the lack of emphasis put on their age gap. Sometimes I read age-gap romances and they talk about their 10-year age gap every other chapter and it can become tiring. It was discussed but I think as long as it is two consenting adults it is not something that is so taboo it's unheard of. So I liked that it was brought up but no one harped on it because if Scarlett wanted to make that decision it was her every right and she was supported in that decision.

Cooper was such a great addition to the story. He was at an age where he wasn't just an add-on character but truly developed and a part of the story. He had such a big heart and I bawled my eyes out during the first epilogue with the exchange between him and Scarlett.

I just loved this little family so so much. Getting to see both of them helping each other out and learning that they do deserve good things and that they found said good things in each other made my heart melt into a happy little puddle. This book just had the exact line up for me to fall in love and I did just that!

P.S. I read this unconventionally out of order while waiting for the second book to be republished so if that is something you are considering doing it can be done with minimal spoilers!
