I absolutely loved Between the World and Me, and feel like that book should be read by everyone, and at least once per year. This book, however, did not have the same effect on me.

I felt like this book was not written for me. There were many sections that I was completely lost, not understanding the references to culture that Mr. Coates was making. I really tried to follow along, and at times I really got what he wanted to convey. Most of the time, I was just lost.

One takeaway I had from this book was that even with all the support in the world, some painfully intelligent kids are determined to get in their own way of success, including as Mr. Coates experienced, letting anger take control and allowing himself to fail in school when he was fully capable of success. It was heartbreaking to read, but I am so glad that he was able to make it through his world and come out on the other side. His genius is so sorely needed and revered.
