American Spy by Lauren Wilkinson
3.0

This book is a stunning example of historical fiction, which is a genre I do not read often. Lauren Wilkinson painstakingly commits to an accurate and detailed portrayal of espionage during the Cold War and the political history of Burkina Faso, which can occasionally make the book a little dense. However, when this book gets good, it gets really, really good. The action sequences are masterfully written and the romance that develops is enticing. I loved Marie's character as she questions herself and what patriotism means, especially as a Black woman in the United States. A very timely read that will certainly cause you to question every character's motive and morality.
