Scarlett by Alexandra Ripley
4.0
i was cautious to begin reading this book because i so fell in love with Gone with the Wind. after all, this book is written by someone else so how could i be sure it would really follow the story plot the original author intended? in the end, i decided to continue on with hope that Ripley would do the story line justice, and satisfactorily she did. after all it is fiction, so anything can happen.
i loved revisiting all my favorite characters and the semi-accurate cultural immersion i got to experience, of the southern US and of Ireland, ensnared my sense of curiosity.
the reason i didnt give Scarlett 5 stars is because i gave Gone with the Wind 5 stars. i want to still acknowledge that this is a very good continuation of a story. but the original Gone with the Wind was mind blowing with intuition, insight, and emotional connection. though this book followed the same plot line and insight, Ripley mimicked Margret Mitchell's style instead of writing a book herself... so yeah, most of the credit in my mind for the success of this novel lies with Mitchell. dont get me wrong, i enjoyed reading this but really Gone with the Wind is the reason it was written... so i give it a 4 because with familiarity of the style and insight gained in GWTW leads to a sense of lacking originality in Scarlett.
so, i enjoyed reading it. but i guess what im really trying to say is Gone with the Wind doesn't need a sequel.
