Search follows Dana and her experiences on the search committee of her Unitarian Universalist church as it looks for a new minister. I found this book surprisingly compelling. I learnt a lot about UU beliefs and churches and was intrigued by what I discovered. This is not a denomination I’m familiar with; in fact there are no UU churches in my part of the world. I was surprised by how lengthy and the involved the search process was, and I became increasingly in its outcome. While I enjoyed the character studies of the committee members and the candidates, I felt this novel was strongest when it came to group dynamics and that interpersonal relationships and interactions. Having served on my fair share of voluntary committees over the years I felt Dana’s pain, especially when committee members refuse to stick to the guidelines and mandates they are supposed to operate under.
