Drinking from the Trough by Mary Carlson

3.0

I tend to be pretty picky when it comes to memoirs, it really needs to grab my attention. Drinking From The Trough by Mary Carlson, narrated by Sara Morsey definitely caught my attention. This memoir is a veterinarian's memoir. I love animals so I was extremely excited to listen to this audiobook. The book goes through Mary Carlson's life as an animal owner and a veterinarian. There are many different animals and procedures discussed throughout the book! I love the stories about her husky named Kelly and her horse as well. This book is great for animal lovers!

One thing is for sure, the author has a huge heart. She often has problems getting too close to the animals that she has to work on. She always treats them kindly and respectfully. It is truly heartwarming. Her discussion on her education and training through Vet school is also entertaining as well and brings to light many things that many people would not think of when it comes to Vet school. It is just as extensive as medical school!

There are a couple of things that I feel could be improved. First of all, the story does jump around quite a bit. The timeline is a little fuzzy which causes some confusion. Especially when the author brings up the name of the animal who died in the previous chapter. The writing is also a little dry and slows the pacing a bit. You can tell the author has a passion for what she does, so that does help! However, this book is more about her life than her job as a vet.

The narrator does an excellent job as well. Everything is clear and enunciated. Overall, a great book for animal lovers or vets! I rate this book 3 out of 5 stars.
