The Mimicking of Known Successes
by Malka Older
I really wanted to love this book and indeed bought it the day it became available. However, I found it a bit meh. I struggled with visualizing the world adequately, even despite the long descriptions of the world. I also found the wording a bit disjointed and the speech style of the characters stilted and old-fashioned. The book also felt a little slow-paced, which is particularly problematic with a novella that's around 170 pages long. It definitely wasn't one of those books I get so excited by and can't put down. In fact it took me a week to get through it as I just wasn't gripped by the mystery. These things really took away my enjoyment of the book, one which I was so excited about trying.
In the future I hope to re-read this, to see if a second reading provides me with a different perspective. In addition, I would still definitely read a sequel! I love human orientated sci-fi as well as mysteries and I'm glad this can add to the genre.
