A Court of Thorns and Roses by Sarah J. Maas

3.0

I thoroughly enjoyed every minute I spent reading this! There failed to be a moment in which I found myself disinterested!

The story begins when a nineteen-year-old girl - named Feyre - sets out on a hunt to help provide for her family, after their fall from wealth. She treks out into the forest; only to find herself slaughtering a mysterious wolf, who she eventually brushes off as nothing more than the animal it is. However, what she doesn’t know is that the wolf she seemingly believed to be harmless was actually a faerie - powerful beings with a prominent hatred for humans and vice-versa. Following these events, Feyre is forced to abide by a Treaty and finds herself trapped in Prythian - the land the faeries inhabit - for the rest of her life.

While at first, I felt that the storyline was moving a bit slower than I had anticipated, it had definitely been redeemed by the mysteries spread throughout the book and the fantastical world of Prythian. Sarah J. Maas did a great job at showing rather than telling within her story, and along with the added complexity of intertwined “mysteries” that led to a great revelation at the end; it’s a treat all on its own.

There isn’t much character progression regarding Feyre, apart from the few moments that she is fuelled by fear or anger, yet I think that this is because a lot of her character progression will be present in the later books.

Something I particularly liked about the storyline was how the ending wasn’t rushed; everything is timed perfectly for a great lengthy resolution.

I’m not usually a big fan of fantasy, but this is dubiously a book I found hard to put down.
