The Road to Dune by Brian Herbert, Frank Herbert, Kevin J. Anderson

4.0

I think the best things about The Road to Dune are the short stories. Sea Child is probably the one that elicited the most emotion out of me—I desperately wanted Corysta to be able to keep Sea Child and raise him and I was so tense when I thought that Sea Child would be killed.

Whipping Mek was also fascinating. It's been some time since I read the Legends of Dune series and being reintroduced to Chirox and the possibility of humanity in machines that he represents made me want to read more about him and his human handlers.

Spice Planet was interesting in its own right as a stand-alone complete alternate version of Dune, but since it's so short (in comparison to Dune) you don't get to develop a connection as strong as the one you develop with the original characters. What I did love about it is that you actually get to explore the planet's life cycle first-hand after Jesse fell into the sand sinkhole. I'm a complete sucker for scifi world-building and getting to read about how the fungi led to the spice and were connected to the worms was awesome.
