Dancing in the Mosque: An Afghan Mother's Letter to Her Son by Homeira Qaderi

5.0

Wow. What an inspirational memoir! Equally heartbreaking and inspirational. As a mother my heart broke hearing how she was forced to leave her children behind when her husband divorced her. Part of the memoir is letters she writes to her son trying to explain why she had to leave him behind. Living in a country like Afghanistan where women have so few rights, she fought against the restrictions from a young age (teaching young refugee children in secret). She also was able to get a PhD in literature when her husband was supportive of her furthering her education and working outside the home. Eventually she moves to America to pursue additional writing and learning opportunities and has never stopped fighting for the rights of Afghan women. Very inspirational, along the lines of Malala and Reading Lolita in Tehran.
