The Husky & His White Cat Shizun: Erha He Ta De Bai Mao Shizun (Novel) Vol. 5 by Rou Bao Bu Chi Rou

adventurous dark emotional mysterious reflective sad tense fast-paced

5.0

I don't think I've read a book faster bc the plot was advancing so much (didn't help that it was short asf). This series is slowly becoming my favorite. Every book just gets me one way or another.

Book 5 starts off with the continuation of Nangong Si's and Song Quitong's wedding. Mo Ran was determined in the last book to stir up some trouble and he sure did just that.
He disguised himself and revealed that Song Quitong and Ye Wangxi were meeting up behind Nangong Si's back. Which actually wasn't true at all seeing that Ye Wangxi is actually a woman. She was forced by Nangong Si's father, Nangong Liu, to act and have the outwardly appearance of a man. Mo Ran aired out their dirty laundry because he felt that he owed a debt to Ye Wangxi from his previous life after causing her an early and unfair death, and he also wanted to prevent Song Quitong's real cruel personality to show, also based off knowledge from his previous life. After the chaos of learning the truth, a Heavenly Rift appeared over the forest where not long before, several wedding guests headed off to take part in the wedding hunt. Chu Wanning and Mo Ran, still disguised, immediately leapt to action.

We learn that Xu Shuanglin, Ye Wangxi's foster father, is colluding with sect leader Nangong Liu. They were also both behind Jingcheng Lake, and Butterfly Town. The point of the Heavenly Rift was to be able to summon a giant skeleton containing the souls of Luo Fenghua from the Infinite Hells. And in order to do that, it required five elemental spiritual essences.

Rufeng sect had a coup a long time ago. Nangong Liu had a younger brother and Luo Fenghua was his shizun. The younger brother, who was more skilled at cultivation than Nangong Si, was mad that his older brother was named sect leader and he ended up stealing the sect leader ring. He used his power to commit many atrocious acts against those who ridiculed him, which ended with Nangong Liu and Luo Fenghua planning the coup. However, once Luo Fenghua had the ring, he was temped by power and put the ring on himself. Eventually, the ring ended up on Nangong Liu, but not before Luo Fenghua cursed Nangong Si. The younger brother was killed by Luo Fenghua. Summoning his corpse back and ingesting its flesh was supposed to lift the curse from Nangong Liu. Nothing went to plan though as we learn that Xu Shuanglin is actually Nangong Si's younger brother, Nangong Xu. Nangong Xu escaped with a more than half dead Nangong Liu, as well as Luo Fenghua's corpse through the third forbidden technique, the Space-Time Gate of Life and Death.

The apocalyptic fire that was set by Nangong Xu consumed Rufeng sect's cities. While they blazed, they showed scenes of Rufeng sects' many secrets. The inferno blazed and the cultivators attempted to rescue as many commoners as they could. Chu Wanning and Mo Ran end up on Flying Flower Isle, which was home to many poor farmers and fishermen. They give all they have in money to pay for housing and food to stay until the fires die down.

The second half of the book had me giggling and shit. The slow burn is starting to burn a little less slow.
The biggest take away is that Mo Ran discovers that Chu Wanning had kept the little pouch with their hair entwined from their fake wedding on his person all these years. Mo Ran also finally admits to Chu Wanning that he likes him and that the feeling is somehow mutual!!

This book really had it all. So much drama and then even a sprinkling of domestic Mo Ran and Chu Wanning. I hope in the end we get to find out who and why someone had Mo Ran relive his life. I eagerly await more.
