The Secret Commonwealth by Philip Pullman
5.0

There is something so welcomingly familiar and strangely unfamiliar about this book. From the first page of The Secret Commonwealth Lyra and her Daemon Pantalaimon are inarguably at the centre of the novel. She is still recognisable as the force of nature she was in the original trilogy.

But to be specific, we’re dealing with an adult Lyra here. Now a scholar, she’s a intelligent 20 year old young woman, whose imagination and fierce spirit seems to be lacking from the child she once was.

The novel itself is an almost Blakean philosophy into the nature of morality, childhood and the imagination. Lyra – the girl we all fell in love with for her energy, curiosity and imagination – has become distanced from her daemon, causing a sort of existential crisis. Never fully recovered from the events of The Amber Spyglass, we can see that Lyra’s burden lies in growing up.
