Afterlife by Julia Alvarez
4.0

I was hooked by the back cover summary when it posed the question "how do we live in a broken world without losing faith in one another or ourselves?

Antonia is living in a world that no longer holds her husband. How long can she stay sad before everyone else moves on? Alvarez writes knowingly about the strain that sisterhood brings, although loving and loyal, sometimes sisters can be a burden. Alvarez also brings humanity to the immigration struggle. I gave this book four stars because it was a good read. Not my favorite read but also very far from the worst. In some ways I wish it was longer, I wish that it would delve into the politics, the real hypocrisy behind immigration and the moral struggle of knowing their lives are human lives as well. I wish that the book could have gone deeper into mental health and what that looks like in Latin American families and why it's so stigmatized. I wish that Alvarez talked about grief a little more.

All in all, this is a really intimate look at a chapter in someone's life and I think it was beautifully written.
