This book cured my reading slump completely. I find Bree to be such a compelling main character because she is who I was during my first years of college, where I attended a PWI. A seventeen year old black girl who was an early college student, I saw myself in her story. This story tackles themes of racism, sexism, and grief with tender love and care. It asks you questions of nurture versus nature, if your destiny is written in your blood or if you have to power to be who you want, love who you want. Even though I’m two years removed from seventeen, I’m sure if I’d read it then, I’d feel exactly the same way! If you want an introduction to fantasy that’s grounded in the real world, read this, you won’t regret it.
