Disorientation by Elaine Hsieh Chou

satire isn't really my thing but i surprisingly really enjoyed this one!

the characters here are all unlikeable, including ingrid the main character, but they aren't meant to be liked anyway (but i would say i liked how ingrid's character arc was developed). i had fun commenting on the stuff they say (and trust me there were a LOT. elaine practically squeezed all the topics that could be discussed in one single book.). the plotlines were absurd and weird but they made the book fun. the discussions raised some valid points although to be honest most of the time in my head most of the dialogues just remind me of stuff i'd see on a regular tuesday on twitter.

one topic that i really liked most were about the hypersexualization of asian women and how these white cis men have certain expectations and ideas of them that they get disappointed when the idea in their head isn't true. another one is ingrid being uncomfortable with her identity and her finally exploring and being able to embrace it.

one thing i didn't like about this book was the way the last quarter of the book was wrapped up. was it underwhelming? yes, even though the way the "villains" in this book got off too easily is pretty much the way how it would have concluded in the real life as well so i guess it was as realistic as it gets?
